RUFUS Hussey
Rufus Taft Hussey (March 12, 1919 – February 24, 1994) was an American marksman who gained fame for his incredible skill with a slingshot.
Born and raised in Randolph County, North Carolina, Hussey honed his abilities out of necessity, using a slingshot to hunt small game for sustenance. This practical experience developed his instinctive aiming style and remarkable accuracy. In the 1950s, recognizing the decline of slingshot use, he began crafting and distributing his own unique designs, each marked with a serial number, to help preserve the tradition.
Hussey's local renown grew into national recognition when he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1986. His captivating demonstration of slingshot expertise and engaging personality charmed audiences. He further showcased his talent in a CBS News segment later that year, solidifying his status as a slingshot legend.
While modern slingshot technology and techniques have advanced beyond the methods employed by Hussey, his influence on the sport remains undeniable. He inspired generations of enthusiasts and helped keep the art of slingshot shooting alive.
