Slingshot Forum - quoted by Bill Hayes of Pocket Predator,

"In the modern era of slingshots there's certain people who have done more for the evolution of slingshots... from box store, big name branded, rod and big tube, inaccurate shooting "toys", turning into modern ergonomic slingshots that in the right hands are capable of incredible shooting feats that can rival the accuracy of even firearms at close ranges...

These guys have had so much to do with the evolution that you really can't refer to them as just influences or innovators, but more as modern pioneers... and they are the reason why slingshot shooting and the slingshot itself has improved so much in the last decade.

Starting with guys like William "Tex" Herriman, an engineer by trade, he brought a more scientific approach to slingshot design and the elastics that make them work. For example, by doing tests he found that by using flat latex bands instead of tubes... Shooting can be a lot more pleasant and rewarding for the user because it requires less draw weight to propel the ammunition, and because of the way flat bands collapse upon themselves upon release, accuracy potential is also raised.
Over the years and because of Tex's influence, pretty much everybody who enjoys the use of flat bands has Tex to thank for that... Including Chuck Saunders, who with Tex's influence and mentoring on the subject, became a believer and user of flat bands on modern designed slingshots."
